Wasn't Jesus the original hippie? With his sandals, dress and kind, compassionate, tender, joyful nature? What a loaded word that is! I am oftentimes called a hippie – in some ways, I am, some not. I almost skipped the writing this week, as I confess that the word ‘worship’ tends to bring out some negative connotations in my mind.
Grace Biskie does a great job of writing about these negative images of ‘worship’ here:
It has to do with our images of this type of worship being ‘judgemental’ and ‘self-righteous’. Sometimes, there is a fine line between ‘Glory to God’ and ‘Glory to Television Evangelists wearing Rolex’s and driving Mercedes’.
The irony is that we have to stop ourselves from being ‘judgemental’ of them.
I heard a very wise preacher once say we have to correct the disconnect from the image of Jesus (compassionate, loving, forgiving, kind, non-judgemental – he purposely sought out ‘sinners’ and made sure they knew they were loved equally) to the image that we often have of contemporary Christians (holier-than-thou, hypocritical).
Jesus would not be pleased.
But ‘worship’ – the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity, deep respect for someone or something – should be a positive.
That which you give your attention to – flourishes.
That which you take your attention away from – dies.
We should all be brave enough to do our part to change the negative connotations of ’worship’ so that the images it brings to mind are of:

Five Minute Friday from Lisa Baker’s http://lisajobaker.com/2013/08/five-minute-friday-worship/ :
You see I think the quiet secret is that you can be a writer and no one needs to recognize your name to make that any more or less true. I think your story matters. The one you write at midnight in 600 word blog posts. The one you scrapbook. The one you piece together for your kids as you fill them in on what grandpa and grandma were like. – See more at: http://lisajobaker.com/#sthash.CLaRaGO7.dpuf
